"There are no longer subjective gatekeepers controlling who gets let "in," promoted and exposed. The choice is ours. Now, anyone can be famous."

Or not. I upload pictures to PBase. There's a window that shows new uploads. That window scrolls down one line when someone uploads a new image. Now try uploading a new image and catching it before it scrolls off that window. After that short-lived moment your image is basically lost, no one will ever see it. PBase is relatively small; not many people upload their images there. Much larger sites, like Flickr must scroll down equally faster. So more is needed to make your image (picture or sound) visible for the public. That means hard work, advertising, etc., all the stuff the labels did for you in 'the old days'. My point being: many will try, but even very good material might never make it; just like in the 'old days'. Labels decided who got in, effectively making the stage quite a bit larger for those that got that far, without a lot of mediocre competition. And probably lots of brilliant and unique artists got crushed in the process, just like that will happen in the 'new days'.

No, you're right; it is not intentional. Being able to measure antibiotics in clean drinking water is not a good sign, though. :)

>Apparently, the enormous amounts of pills that are used by the population leave their traces in the drinking water even after it is cleaned.

But at least it is not intentional....

This story isn't that far fetched, I'm afraid. Check this article on Slashdot: http://science.slashdot.org/science/08/03/09/2121249.shtml
