Apparently, Facebook got more traffic than Google this week.

Not more hits, more traffic. Facebook’s pages of course are a lot ‘richer’ in data than Google’s, so this is defiantly not about hits. Still, a lot of noise was made about this. I don’t think it is as significant as some people seem to. The two sites have very different purposes. Facebook tries to keep users as long as possible on the site, using games, photos etc. Google, in contrast, tries to get users as quickly as possible from its site to the destination of its customers. I would tie a bit more significance to the number of hits, or the number of users – but mostly I would simply look at the profitability of both companies. That is far more important than the amount of traffic. I think that if youtube was counted in this measure, it would surely top Facebook easily…!
