Qwerty…

The keyboard you’re using now is most likely set in a QWERTY layout (named for the first 6 characters of the top row of letters). This layout was invented by Christopher Sholes in 1874 because people were typing too fast on typewriters back then, thus causing the machine to jam. Sholes did frequency analysis on letter-pairs and separated pairs of letters that tend to cause mechanical jams when typed in quick successions like TH. Sholes’ new layout was designed to slow down typists (technically, he aimed to improve typing speed by reducing jams – and indeed, that’s exactly what happened.)

Well, at least it succeeded in becoming a (nearly) global standard as well….

It is actually running at 7 k/h. That is pretty fast, and it does seem to do a great job of it!

Now, can we have this in cellphones asap please? My New Shiny G1 (great phone, btw) is empty in one day and a half, at most… We are sourly in need of more portable power!

Amazon Kindle 2: $359

Amazon has announced the new e-book reader: the Kindle 2…

Link

I still think it is a very expensive device. Basically, it is a laptop without a separate keyboard, or a very large iPod Touch – without touch, and without color – and a very slow screen. I think the screen has it advantages (no glare!), but $ 350,-…jees….

It looks nice, that is true:

Unplugging The World’s Biggest Spam Host

The volume of junk e-mail sent worldwide dropped drastically today after a Web hosting firm identified by the computer security community as a major host of organizations allegedy engaged in spam activity was taken offline, according to security firms that monitor spam distribution online.

Interesting collection of stories about the takedown of this hoster. I notice it too: I can see that the number of spams blocked by Google is way lower than a few days ago…!

Minority Report interface a reality..!

Link

Yeah. Well, it is great that is works and all that. But I really don’t see the every day application of this. You might use it if you are a scientist, and need to navigate 3D data, or something like that. But mundane tasks like managing files etc? I don’t see it…
